two sides of St. Andrews

In 1984, Seve shook the golf world with the original fist pump after draining the birdie putt on 18.

In 1995, Arnie waved an emotional goodbye atop Swilcan Bridge.

In 2000, Tiger roared to victory with an astonishing score of 19-under par.

The Home of Golf in St. Andrews, Scotland, has produced a dizzying array of magical moments, and there is much more to come. With the 150th Open happening next week, it’s a perfect opportunity to reflect on the power of any moment to transform a sport, a community, a nation or a family.

Miss the magic of the moment; you miss it forever. Capture magic in the moment, and it lives forever.”

That’s why Josh Parlee’s epic documentary, “The Long Shadow of Legacy,” is much more than just one man’s story. Since its world premiere, the inbox has been overflowing with heartfelt appreciation for how Josh and his stellar team at Defiant Astronaut Media captured the raw spirit of a game, a family and a precious moment frozen in time. His production artistry is comparable to a perfectly-struck, 288-yard drive splitting a lush, well-groomed fairway.

“I just finished watching "The Long Shadow of Legacy," which was exceptional. I loved every minute of it! This video reaffirms my love of golf and what golf is really about. Your Dad's story is refreshing, restorative and highly inspiring!

Born 7 minutes from #1 tee at St. Andrews, Scotland, my father began playing with clubs known as mashies, spoons and niblicks. Little did this former club pro know how the enduring qualities of achievement, integrity and friendship would span four generations and, thanks to YouTube, touch many others along the way. In many respects, Dad and Josh are exceptional shot-making artists from different eras and different disciplines. Each found their way to capture “St. Andrews Style” moments beyond words or sounds.

“I have found the game to be a universal language wherever I travelled at home or abroad.” BEN HOGAN

p.s…. One of the fascinating things about golf is how it truly reflects the cycle of life. No matter how well or poorly you played, you must go back to the first tee box the next day and begin all over again. To bring out the very best in yourself. It’s a lesson that will never get old and one I wish I had acquired much earlier in life when Dad was at the very top of his game. The mini-documentary with people in and out of the golf world raving explains a lot about anyone’s family history and how important it is to create memories that last a lifetime.

Love never dies. People do. But when they do depart, let’s hope the greatest legacy they leave is love.

p.p.s… Many thanks to Zach Rodrigue, Director of Golf at The Algonquin Resort, for his enthusiastic help in making arrangements for next week’s M.G.A. Tour event in St. Andrews, N.B. Although nearly filled, there may be room for another twosome to join the field for the Four Generational Invitational and compete for the prestigious Commissioners Cup. Equivalent in some respects to the Claret Jug, this custom-made trophy is officially sanctioned by Tour Commissioner and best-selling author Ken Reid of Sportsnet. Besides the hardware, the best-ball competition offers a chance for you and a partner to secure your place in golf history and become part of a legacy unlike any other in sports. Info here.
