Changing the World ...One Sparkle at a Time

Just suppose you lived in a remote location without any substantial monetary means or powerful, personal connections to speak of? How would you go about the serious business of changing the world if you constantly felt economically, culturally and socially subjugated in every way?

In Rachel’s case, her journey began at the kitchen table of her north end home in Regina, Saskatchewan. Dazzled by Vogue Magazine and bitten hard by the jewelry bug since the age of six, the fashion capitals of the world like Paris, Milan and New York seemed like a distant, far-fetched fantasy. Undeterred, Rachel dreamed of a much different world; one that offered a stylish alternative to her humble surroundings in hockey-mad and football-crazy Saskatchewan.

Do you believe the world needs more female entrepreneurs who can use their unique perspective to tackle social challenges through their business?

Committed to a number of social justice and women’s causes, Rachel’s company has donated well over $2 million in cash and product to a variety of charitable organizations that provide opportunities all over Canada and globally. Along the way, Rachel’s jewelry designs have made appearances o at the Olympics, on Hollywood’s red carpet and two of her pieces are owned by the Queen of England.

In a wide-ranging discussion on a recent TEC Canada podcast, the CEO & Founder of Hillberg & Berk reflects on modest beginnings, a prairie work ethic and her mission to create a company of women empowering other women … “one sparkle at a time”.

Join us and hear the incredibly spellbinding story of Saskatchewan’s Rachel Mielke and How to Change the World … One Sparkle at a Time, on this edition of Leaders & Legends.

p.s... In case you wanted to take a peek at what the Queen of England has in her collection from Hillberg & Berk, here is a photo of the Sapphire Jubilee Brooch presented in 2017 by Governor-General David Johnston to commemorate the Queen’s 65th anniversary as monarch and Canada’s 150th birthday. ,Featuring more than 400 diamonds and 48 Canadian sapphires with a sleek snowflake design, Rachel's creation reflects the chilly landscape of the Canadian Arctic.

Taking about eight months to complete, the sapphires come from the only known Canadian deposit of the gem, located on Nunavut’s Baffin Island. Calling her the original empowered woman, Rachel Mielke says Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is “a symbol of strength and inspiration for all women and people around the world; one who truly defines what sparkle means to us.”

p.p.s... There is a bit of a personal bombshell towards the end of the podcast with Rachel, but if you watch her TEDx Talk from 2014, you can see that her life and career path never hinges on asking for permission or wondering "who will let me?". The only question Rachel and other successful women entrepreneurs are asking is "Who is going to stop me?”
