Are Crusty Old Guys Killing Your Business?

You are sitting in a boardroom.

The meeting you’re attending feels like a private version of hell. Somewhere between Groundhog Day and listening to the Charlie Brown Teacher. A meeting being run by grizzled veterans who came straight down from the balcony on the Muppet Show.

We’ve all seen this movie before. Out-of-date, out-of-touch companies, run by 'crusty old guys', who thought they were too big to fail.

Throughout my career, I've had a plethora of encounters with senior leaders who refuse to see how fast the world is changing around them. Which is why the book and movie "Moneyball" might be more relevant than ever. If you think that this is just a baseball movie, you will the point about how its insights connect to what's really going on inside your organization.

Watch this edition of Leaders & Legends and see how a true-life baseball story can teach you how to outthink, outsmart and outperform the ‘crusty old guys’.

“It was hard to know which of Billy's qualities was most important to his team's success: his energy, his resourcefulness, his intelligence, or his ability to scare the living shit out of even very large professional baseball players.” MICHAEL LEWIS, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

p.s.. In the case of the Oakland Athletics, the old guard viewed home runs, RBI's and batting average as "sacred cows" not to be messed with. In my experience, every organization has its own herd of beatified bovine being worshiped on a daily basis. And it isn't until someone demonstrates a level of insubordination - usually from an outsider such as the Peter Brand character in Moneyball - that real change starts to happen.
