HOW TO PLACE BETTER BETS AGAINST NEW COMPETITION
Not much is expected when a pro sports expansion team begins its inaugural season.
The initial incarnation is typically filled by a roster of free-agent rejects; players and coaches discarded by the other status quo franchises. With the talent deck stacked against them, nobody gives them any real chance of winning, which means no one really takes them seriously.Would you believe the same dynamic happens in any competitive business environment when a new player shows up ready to hit the metaphorical ice in any given market? An expansion team is no different than many start-ups; populated by an island of misfit toys that could not find a place to play in Corporate America.
And few of the established fat cats view them as a threat - until its too late. New players are infiltrating and disrupting market spaces everywhere which is why its worth paying attention to the Cinderella story that is the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights. With a jaw-dropping record of 45-19-5, the Golden Knights are first in the Pacific Division and a runaway success as the best expansion team in all of pro sports history. P.S… The Vegas Golden Knights season is even more impressive...
When you compare them to the best expansion teams in other pro sports. No first-year team in major league baseball has done better than the 70-91 record posted by the 1961 Los Angeles Angels. The best a debut team in the NBA could do was a 33-48 record from the 1967 Chicago Bulls and no NFL expansion franchise has topped the 7-9 season posted by the 1995 Carolina Panthers.
Thanks to a few shrewd roster moves from General Manager George McPhee and the "never quit" mentality of Head Coach Gerard Gallant, the Golden Knights have become the toast of the town; especially after the way the team responded to the tragic events that unfolded in Vegas back in October of 2017.
